Meetings & Updates

Christmas is a busy time for retail in Downtown Ellsworth. The stores are decorated and welcoming. The Grand has a full calendar of Christmas entertainment including a first for Downtown - luminaria will set the Downtown sidewalks aglow on December 19th after the Met Opera presentation. There are 2 new restaurants Downtown expanding dining options for the holidays - Finn's Irish Pub and Amici's for Italian Cuisine.

Looking back on 2009, we have made many strides forward in keeping Downtown vibrant. Our work with City planner Michelle Gagnon on a new parking zoning ordinance was a great success. City Manager, Michelle Beal helped us erect new historic Downtown signs. Members of the Association helped organize a new Sustainable Ellsworth Committee working on many Downtown initiatives such as bike/ped paths, cardboard/paper recycling and switching Downtown lighting to LEDs. And with the help of Benjamin Speed and Summerfly Productions, we brought an open air cinema to Downtown showing free family films on warm summer nights.

Although there have been some store closures Downtown, many have opened and the future looks brighter. A new photography gallery cooperative will open later this month on State Street under the direction of Robin Farrin, Steve Shelton moved his high end real estate business to State Street. Mike Curtis will open Union River Kids for toys and books on Main Street. H & R Block which moved to upper Main Street is readying for a busy tax season.

The Association is taking a break from meetings during the holiday season. In 2010, we are forming a new Board of Directors for the Association and look forward to reinvigorating our members in support of our mission. Anyone interested in serving on the Board to help determine our 2010 slate of projects,, is welcome to contact us. Drop by Pyramid Studios Jewelry Design.

In the meantime, keep the faith. Please shop locally to support your neighbors and have a safe, happy and healthy holiday season.
