Woodlawn

Woodlawn sits on the crest of a hill overlooking the city of Ellsworth and surrounded by majestic pine, spruce, and hemlock trees. Visitors may tour the museum and see an original family collection and learn about the Col. John Black family. Or guest may stroll through formal gardens, picnic on lush lawns, explore trails where the Blacks' horses once cantered, browse the museum store or investigate the carriage and sleigh collections. Woodlawn is a property of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations, the group that helped form nearby Acadia National Park.

Project to Restore Stone Wall

For over 180 years, stone walls have quietly defined Woodlawn’s boundaries.  Measuring approximately a mile and half long, their grace and beauty are testament to a traditional New England craft while quietly reminding us of the estate’s agricultural roots.  While recent tree removal work along both avenues has done much to illuminate the beauty of the walls, it has also exposed sections that are in dire need of restoration.  As such, Woodlawn is pleased to announce a project to begin their restoration.

The current condition of the stone walls varies greatly throughout the property.  This initial project will focus on a test area just past the entrance to the property.  If this initial project goes well, and if additional funds are raised, more sections of the wall will be restored.

Worm Composting
Saturday, August 28th, 10 am - 11 am

Hate to waste those compostable kitchen scraps that you gather during the winter months?  Don't have space for an outdoors compost pile?  Why not try worm composting!  Wriggly red worms turn food scraps and organic wastes into nature's best soil to grow more food.  Master Gardener Volunteer Theresa Guethler will explain how to start and maintain a worm compost bin.  These bins may be stored right inside your house and are great projects for children and adults

Precious Metal Clay Jewelry Workshop with Lisa Salsbury
Thursday, August 26, 9am-3:30pm

Make your own jewelry from (PMC) Precious Metal clay.  This easy-to-use clay consists of microscopic silver particles suspended in an organic binder. PMC can be worked much like any modeling clay. It is then fired at a high temperature, burning away the binder and leaving a pure silver piece. With very few tools and a bit of imagination, anyone can make beautiful jewelry with PMC.  You will come away at the end of the class with a necklace and earrings that you made & designed yourself, as well as the knowledge and skills to continue working with PMC on your own.

Cost:  $100 for members/$110 for non-members. Pre-registration required.
